How to improve the download speed of my PC?

Idea-1. check the memory size

(start , run , type "dxdiag' , Press OK)

If the available memory is very low, it will affect the download speed. Memory size of 2GB or more is better. If you have less than 512 MB, surely, it will affect the speed of Internet.

Idea-2. check the free space in c: drive.

When the physical memory (RAM) is used up, XP looks to the paging file for its excess requirements. This memory is known as virtual memory. (XP makes the default paging file approximately 1.5 times the amount of installed RAM). The available virtual memory in your pc (windows xp) can be seen by the command:

Start ,Run , type "dxdiag', Press OK

Idea-3. Install a Download Accelerator software.

1. You can install "Download Accelerator Plus" (abbreviated as DAP). This will increase the speed of download almost by 5 times.

Precaution: If your computer is holding critical data, think twice before downloading and installing softwares from Internet. There is always risk.

How DAP works?

DAP creates five simultaneous connections with the server and does the parallel downloads.
Have a look at the screen capture. I am downloading a youtube video through keepvid.com using DAP.
The netstat command shows five parallel connections. The DAP window also shows five connections and the quantity downloaded by each connection..

Lesson 1 : Lion, the CEO

By the way, Let me introduce Miss Arora. She is working as a Professor in DDIS (Dubakoor Dongre Institute of Management).. She is always jovial with her students. And, always, she starts her lecture with a small story.

Arora,today, started the story like this:

One day a Lion was sitting outside his cave, lying lazily in the sun. Along comes a fox, out on a walk.

Fox: "Do you know the time, because my watch is broken"

Lion: "Oh, Give me your watch, I can easily repair the watch for you"

Fox: "Hmm... But it's a very complicated mechanism, and you will only spoil it more."

Lion: "Oh no, give it to me, and it will be fixed"

Fox: "That's ridiculous! Any fool knows that lazy lions like you cannot fix complicated watches"

Lion: "Sure they do, give it to me and it will be fixed"

The lion disappears into his cave, and after a while he comes back with the watch which is running perfectly. The fox is impressed, and the lion continues to lie lazily in the sun, looking very pleased with himself.

Soon a Tiger comes along and stops to watch the lazy Lion in the sun.

Tige r: "Can I come and watch TV tonight with you, because mine became faulty"

Lion: "Dont worry, Bring your TV. I can easily fix it easily."

Tiger : "You don't expect me to believe such rubbish, do you? There is no way that a lazy lion like you can fix a complicated TV"

Lion: "No problem. Do you want to try it?"

The Tiger brought the TV.

The lion goes into his cave, and after a while comes back with a perfectly fixed TV. The Tiger went away happily and amazed.

Inside the Cave:

In one corner are half a dozen small and intelligent looking rabbits who are busily doing very complicated work with very detailed instruments. In the other corner lies a huge lion looking very pleased with himself.

Moral :

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY A MANAGER IS FAMOUS, LOOK AT THE WORK OF HIS SUBORDINATES.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY SOMEONE UNDESERVED IS PROMOTED; LOOK AT THE WORK OF HIS SUBORDINATES.

interface Serial 0
ip unnumbered Ethernet 0

Aunty why in the above commands, serial0 is not having any ip address?

For point to point lines, ip address is not that much necessary. By the above method we are saving ip addresses.

But you have written the word 'ethernet0' in the interface serial0, why aunty?

An interface cannot work without any ip address. so we have simply borrowed the ip address of ehternet0.

But if ethernet0 is down, then what will happen to serial0, it will also go down aunty?

Yes, that is one of the disadvantage with this 'ip unnumbered' concept. This can be avoided by borrowing the ip address from a LOOPBACK ip address. The loopback interfaces are VIRTUAL. so they will never go down.

Another disadvantage is : you cannot test whether this serial0 is really up or down, from a remote router.

If I put the command "show ip interface brief" what result i will get aunty?

RouterA# show ip interface brief

Ethernet0 172.16.10.254 YES manual up up
Serial0 172.16.10.254 YES manual up up

Shall i confiure 'ip unnumbered' in my ethernet interface of the router, aunty?

No, only in point to point network ,that is, only in serial links, you can configure ip unnumbered.

Can i configure 'ip unnumbered' in both the ends of a point to point link, aunty?

Yes.
